Apple Sunday at United Church
by Reverend Elizabeth Griffin
If you are new to Fairfax, the United Church of Fairfax
is the little brick church on the corner of Fletcher
Road, near the bakery.
The building has stood on that corner since 1848 !
We are not a mega-church, we don't have lots of
electronics, but what we do have is a friendly
congregation committed to the fellowship of the Gospel.
We have a tradition called "Apple Sunday" which is a
celebration of autumn, of harvest, of all God's
blessings, including children--which is why Sunday
school began on Apple Sunday !
Our Sunday school began on Sunday, September 16th
during worship, which was held at 10:45am.
Sunday school classes are for pre-schoolers through 7th
grade.
Even if you have never been to church,
you are welcome to join our worship fellowship and
bring your child to Sunday school.

Pie & Ice Cream Social Coming Up !!!
by Mike Cain
The year was 1988. The Fairfax Historical Society
was in tough financial straights and in need of a
fundraiser. Gene Cain, Society member and former
secretary, wanted to do something "old-fashioned"
and thought a social with homemade pies would go
over well. She made arrangements to have the Social
on the front lawn of the Baptist Building on Main
Street. She contacted the Fairfax-Fletcher-Westford
Band to do a concert. She then contacted all the
people she knew that made pies.
Everyone was willing to help.
In August of 1988, the first Pie and Ice Cream
Social was held. And it was a hit.
Prices were kept low, so if someone wanted seconds,
they could afford it.
Gene passed away a year later, but her children
have kept the Pie and Ice Cream Social going.
Daughter, and former Society president, Margie,
continued her mother's idea. Now, son, and current
president Michael, makes all the arrangements of
soliciting pies and ordering ice cream from Minor's
Country Store.
It is the annual main fundraiser for the Fairfax
Historical Society, and it is the official start
to summer, held the last Sunday in June.
It is still held on the front lawn of the Baptist
Building on Main Street.
The Fairfax-Fletcher-Westford Band provides the
music. And all the pies are still homemade.
In 2009
Sunday June 24th at 7pm marked the 20th anniver-
sary of Gene Cain's "old-fashioned" evening.

Steeple Market Burns Christmas Eve 2008
Fire Destroys Steeple Market
An historic landmark in the heart of Fairfax
was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve.
Henry Raymond's site has lots of photos.
About 8:00pm, Wednesday evening, a neighbor
called 911 after he saw smoke coming from the
building. Thick black smoke was coming out of
the foundation and the back basement door.
Firefighters struggled with very thick smoke,
high heat and 40+mph winds. Flames came out
the back door on the second floor an hour later.
Flames spread through the kitchen to the steeple.
Cathy Thayer got an interesting photo,
By 11:00pm, the steeple had fallen into the
blazing fire. There were no injuries.
At least one man is homeless. More to come.

Regarding the Steeple Market Fire.
It's Got A Steeple On It !!!
Pierre Menard, owner of Steeple Market, came
before the Fairfax Selectboard Monday night and
presented a preliminary drawing of what a new
Steeple Market may look like. He hopes to re-build,
but it might take a couple months for insurance.
He will make a final decision at that time.
The preliminary drawings have a steeple on top, but
the building is not as tall since there are no apart-
ments upstairs. Pierre and the Board need to work out
water allotments, but no problems were seen.
A meeting with the Development Review Board will
also be needed somewhere down the road.
Pierre is doing well and sends his thanks to all.

Christmas 2004
"The spirit of the season was in the air at
Swanton Teen Center.
The teens checked their lists twice when
they shopped for needy.
WCAX prepared them for frightful weather with
dozens of new hats and mittens.
And Dr. Bill Roberts made all delightful when
he gave the center a new truck.
Since October, the center’s board has been
conducting a fund-raiser to meet operating expenses.
A 2005 GMC ½ ton truck was made possible by Handy
Pontiac of St. Albans.
Gifts of $150 put donors in a pool for the truck.
On Thursday, 12/16, Officer Jason Stoddard drew
Dr. Roberts’ as the winner who then turned the truck
back to the center.
Teens, parents, and board members all cheered when
they realized what happened.
With over two hundred contributors and citizens
like Dr. Roberts, there’s no room for Scrooge in
Franklin County."
School Honors Reg & Pat Broe
by Scott Lang (& Chris)
April 14, the day before long time BFA employee of the maintenance staff, Reggie Broe retired, students and staff all gathered in the high school gym to say thank you to a man who has given so much to keep BFA a safe and a wonderful place for learning.
Reggie will be joined in retirement in a few months by his wife Pat who also has served the school for years in different capacities.
Symbolically, the day of Reggie’s retirement was the first day of the gym floor replacement project.
Middle school principal Tom Walsh noted that an era had come to an end with Reggie Broe and the high school gym floor being replaced, "One had bad knees and one was bad for the knees."
A retirement party was held for Pat and Reggie on May 2nd at BFA in the Elementary Gym.
Many people attended, Lyall roasted both Reg and Pat, they both received many golf oriented gifts.
May all their days be spent in the fairways.
The gym floor project is scheduled for completion by June 1.

Hazen 58, BFA Fairfax Bullets 53
Hazen JV 44, BFA Fairfax JV Bullets 27
Hazen has one of the best offensive basketball
players in the State of Vermont in Brad Mader.
BFA is well known for defense. (Jan 05 S.I.)
Ben McAvey, Russell Manning, Alex Weber and
Jake Ainsworth all covered the 6'8" Mader.
BFA led 22-14 with 1:00 left in the first half.
Seth Rebeor scored almost at will and drew 2
fouls from Mader, but 4 quick points to end
the first half and 5 quick points to open the
second half put Hazen up 23-22. BFA took the
lead back on Rebeor's driving lay-up, but
Hazen's speed, tough defense and sharp passing
kept the Bullets chasing them the rest of the
way. Hazen led 35-32 after three quarters.
Coming down the stretch, Hazen's near perfect
free throw shooting put the game away.
Friday, January 13th was sunny and warm in
Fairfax and Georgia, VT, a.k.a. Franklin-1.
Temperatures were in the 50's with sunshine.

chiropractic evaluation, a massage, and a
home-cooked dinner for four.

FAIRFAX HAS BEEN SELECTED
to participate in a federally funded program
to encourage and support kids walking and biking
to school regularly, routinely, and safely.
The program integrates elements of transportation,
economics, health and physical activity,
environmental awareness and safety into one
program.
The Vermont SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL (SR2S)
Program will provide support in the form
of funding and services to participating
schools.
It is a comprehensive approach to improving
education and infrastructure with several
elements including encouraging walking and
biking to school, traffic education and
enforcement.
Funding and Services will also be provided
for sidewalk improvements, traffic calming
and speed reduction, pedestrian and bicycle
crossing improvements, on-street bike
facilities, shared paths, bike parking, etc.
A task force will work with local educators
and town representatives to evaluate what is
needed and facilitate improvements to the
road/sidewalk/parking infrastructure.
The task force is a collaborative with the
Vt. Dept. of Health, Vt. Dept. of Education,
American Heart Assoc., State Bicycle and
Pedestrian Organizations, State land use
planning organizations, Vt. Dept. of Housing
and Community Affairs, Governor's Highway
Safety Council/Law Enforcement, School Super-
visory Union, and Regional Planning Commission.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a
collaborative effort in the town of Fairfax
to encourage healthier activities, health and
wellness education, and improve the road and
sidewalk infrastructure to support the activity.
Fairfax will be participating in this program
for the next two school years.

Franklin-1 Representative Carolyn Branagan
The shootings in Essex were a shocking tragedy
and I am deeply sorry for the families involved.
How could this happen?
Domestic violence is not just a women's issue,
but effects everyone in our society.
Men are victims too.
More than half of the homicides in Vermont
in the past decade were domestic violence related.
In 2005 the Vermont Network Against Domestic and
Sexual Violence program responded to 14,964
hotline calls.
This crime was a domestic homicide that included
violence in the workplace.
Domestic violence is not a private family matter.
It often follows victims to their places of
employment.
People who experience domestic violence are often
harassed while at work.Unfortunately domestic
violence happens in Vermont every day.
The majority of homicides in Vermont are the
result of domestic violence.
Perpetrators of domestic violence who threaten
to kill their partners become more dangerous
after separation, are possessive of their partner
and have access to weapons.
What should you do if you think someone is a
victim of domestic violence ?
Believe the victim and help him/her get to
resources without pressuring or judging.
The victim is not at fault.
Maintaining confidentiality and trust often
is directly related to safety.
If the person is in immediate danger,
of course call 911 to get help from law
enforcement and rescue officials.
You can call the statewide Domestic Violence
Hotline at 1-800-228-7395
from anywhere in the state to get hold of
the Network Against Domestic and Sexual
Violence.
Share the number if you suspect a friend or
family member is a victim.
Abuse is never OK.
This crime should never happen again in
Vermont. We've lost enough people.
Sincerely,
Representative Carolyn Branagan
