Lake Champlain's Fort "Blunder" and
Fort Montgomery- A Closer Look

A Multimedia Presentation by Jim Millard,
sponsored by the Georgia Vermont Public Library

The ruins of old Fort Montgomery have fascinated
local residents and travelers crossing the Rouses
Point, New York/Alburgh, Vermont bridge for gen-
erations.
Long a feature of North Country legend,
it has for an equally long time been difficult to
sort the truth from the myth about the ruins known
to locals as "Fort Blunder".
Jim discussed many of the misconceptions about
this mysterious structure and shared dozens of
vintage photographs, plans and maps.
Since he has been given unprecedented access to
the deteriorating ruins for his research, Jim
provided a fascinating visual tour of the fort
as it stands today.
He had copies of all of his books available
for signing and sale.

Apple Sunday at United Church
by Reverend Elizabeth Griffin
If you are new to Fairfax, the United Church of Fairfax
is the little brick church on the corner of Fletcher
Road, near the bakery.
The building has stood on that corner since 1848 !
We are not a mega-church, we don't have lots of
electronics, but what we do have is a friendly
congregation committed to the fellowship of the Gospel.
We have a tradition called "Apple Sunday" which is a
celebration of autumn, of harvest, of all God's
blessings, including children--which is why Sunday
school began on Apple Sunday !
Our Sunday school began on Sunday, September 16th
during worship, which was held at 10:45am.
Sunday school classes are for pre-schoolers through 7th
grade.
Even if you have never been to church,
you are welcome to join our worship fellowship and
bring your child to Sunday school.
For further information, contact Rev. Elizabeth
at pastorliz@earthlink.net.

Dear Fairfax,
Welcome Back to School.
My neighborhood has gotten a bit busier now that about
1,100 staff and students have returned to BFA.
Cars and buses are pulling in and driving off.
Some folks are walking to school also and
this can be a dangerous time.
I would like to applaud those who have been busy for
over a year now, establishing our Safe Routes to School
Program. The safety of our children is paramount.
Though school has re-opened, summer is still alive.
Gardens are still producing vegetables and kids are
still swimming.
There are several events planned for September,
I hope you get to enjoy them all.
September 11th will mark a tragic day
and I also hope you will remember our troops.
They face danger each and every day.
Take Care & God Bless,
Chris Santee

Lamoille River Sweep held Sunday !!!
The sweep of the Lamoille River today
was a tremendous success !!!!
We had about a dozen people show up.
Megan was our youngest sweeper.
She will be in the 8th grade this year and has
only been a Fairfax resident for about 6 months.
As you can see from the pictures,
we pulled a lot of junk from the river and the banks.
Bikes, a lawn mower, a shopping cart, various car
pieces and parts, old farm equipment, an entire rear
car seat, lots of tires rims, other assorted metal
things and 32 tires !
We also tried to clean-up all the glass we could
find from the river banks.
Thanks so much to everyone who helped out today !
The weather was perfect and the river level
couldn't have been any better.
Many times during the afternoon we worked together
in small teams to get the job done.
Not only was it fun and rewarding, but working
together was very enjoyable too.

Governor Urges Vermonters to Buy Local
for July 4th Celebrations and Other Summer Events

Governor Jim Douglas is urging Vermonters to take
advantage of Vermont’s many locally grown and pro-
duced agricultural products over the summer months.
Governor Douglas said he hopes that as Vermonters
prepare for Independence Day gatherings, and other
summer events, they will look for and buy locally
grown and produced agricultural products.
To further encourage Vermonters to buy local,
Douglas released a public service announcement that
he hopes radio stations will air throughout the season:
"If Vermonters shifted just 10 percent of their
food spending to buying local we could add $100
million to the Vermont economy,"

the Governor said.
"The best way for each of us to participate is to
look for and buy locally grown agricultural products
at stores, farmer's markets, farm stands, and rest-
aurants. Local agriculture is a big part of what
makes Vermont such a wonderful place,"

Douglas added.
"Our farmers and growers provide the food we eat,
and they serve as stewards of our beautiful working
landscape. By doing our part to support local farms
we can help protect this treasured resource,"

he said.
"As we shop, we just have to remember to buy local,
it’s just that simple."

Pie & Ice Cream Social = A Success !
The 20th annual Pie & Ice Cream Social in Fairfax,
held Sunday night at the Baptist Building and put
on by the Fairfax Historical Society was a success.
Henry Raymond has some more photos

The year was 1988. The Fairfax Historical Society
was in tough financial straights and in need of a
fundraiser. Gene Cain, Society member and former
secretary, wanted to do something "old-fashioned"
and thought a social with homemade pies would go
over well. She made arrangements to have the Social
on the front lawn of the Baptist Building on Main
Street. She contacted the Fairfax-Fletcher-Westford
Band to do a concert. She then contacted all the
people she knew that made pies.
Everyone was willing to help.
In August of 1988, the first Pie and Ice Cream
Social was held. And it was a hit.
Prices were kept low, so if someone wanted seconds,
they could afford it.
Gene passed away a year later, but her children
have kept the Pie and Ice Cream Social going.
Daughter, and former Society president, Margie,
continued her mother's idea. Now, son, and current
president Michael, makes all the arrangements of
soliciting pies and ordering ice cream from Minor's
Country Store.
It is the annual main fundraiser for the Fairfax
Historical Society, and it is the official start
to summer, held the last Sunday in June.
It is still held on the front lawn of the Baptist
Building on Main Street.
The Fairfax-Fletcher-Westford Band provides the
music. And all the pies are still homemade.
Sunday June 24th at 7pm marked the 20th anniver-
sary of Gene Cain's "old-fashioned" evening.

Minor's Country Store turned 30
There was a party with a band at the store.

Birds of a Feather
by Chris Santee

"Birds of a Feather - Helping One Another"
The advertising class of Bellows Free Academy
in Fairfax is raising money for the
American Red Cross for the Hurricane Relief Fund.
Students in the class along with art teachers and
selected local artists are designing and painting
handcrafted birdhouses.
The birdhouses were purchased through the
"Adopt-A-Birdhouse" campaign at BFA where students,
faculty and staff members are contributing to
the project.
The birdhouses will be sold by Silent Auction
during October.
The schedule is as follows:
October 11 Blood drive at BFA Fairfax;
October 12 - 26 American Red Cross,
32 No. Prospect Street, Burlington;
Fairfax businesses and the Fairfax Public/School
Library.
The students in the advertising class decided that
the birdhouses should "take flight" for optimum
exposure.
Therefore, on October 19, students collected all
the houses around town and headed to Burlington.
At the Red Cross building, they switched
the display.
Their plan is to make all the birdhouses available
to all possible bidders.
On October 27 and 28, the students will tally
the bids and contact the lucky new birdhouse owners.
All proceeds collected from contributions and
actual birdhouse purchases will be donated to the
American Red Cross in order to help victims of
the hurricanes "get back on the right wing".
Mr. Scott Lang, BFA principal, was asked to comment
on the project.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for students to
reach out to the community and support
an important cause".
If you would like more information,
contact Abby Lidster, a member of the student
advertising team, by calling 849-6711.
Please consider making a contribution or placing
a bid on a birdhouse.
Let’s work together to make a difference.

North Fairfax Pre-K
by Lisa Stone

My name is Lisa Stone and I’m a stay-at-home-mom with two girls in college, a six-year-old son and an almost three-year-old son. I operate a registered home childcare in North Fairfax that will now focus on preschoolers. The emphasis of my program is on preparing our children for Kindergarten while offering them lots of fun activities to enjoy today.
As we play, the children in my program will work on early literacy and math skills. We will learn about science and nature through exploration and simple experiments. The children will have lots of practice with sharing and working on their self-help skills. Much of the work we do at school will reinforce and expand on what you’re likely already doing with your children at home. At the heart of my curriculum are the Vermont Early Learning Standards which provide valuable guidance and direction across eight areas of learning.
One of the most significant advantages of a healthy preschool program, and one not easy to replicate at home, is the socialization our children will experience. Building friendships with same-age children and learning how to interact with them are essential aspects of Kindergarten readiness. Learning through play with other children is so important and is a primary focus of my program.
Please call soon for more information and to arrange a visit. If you have already decided on a preschool for your child, but know someone else who might be interested in learning more about my program, I would certainly appreciate your passing my information along. Windtop Preschool's hours will be 8:45am-12:45pm Monday through Thursday. My phone number is 527-9696.
I hope to be speaking with you soon!

BFA Student Wins Healthy
Heritage Recipe Contest
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - April 18, 2005 -
Four national winners have been selected in the Third Annual National Middle School Healthy Heritage Recipe Contest at Johnson & Wales University, in conjunction with Healthy Kids Challenge, a youth-oriented health initiative.
The Eastern Region Winner is Christian Williams, from Fairfax, Vt. His recipe is "Green Mountain Maple Muffins."
He said, "The reason this type of muffin was selected was because it used Vermont's all-natural maple syrup. In 2004, Vermont was the number-one producer of maple syrup in the United States. We live in Franklin County, which produced the most maple syrup of all the counties in Vermont."
The Healthy Heritage Contest is designed to allow young chefs of tomorrow to showcase their culinary creativity; the contest encouraged seventh or eighth graders to submit an original (or modification of a standard) recipe that reflects someone's heritage while adhering to general nutrition guidelines.
Each winner receives tuition scholarship certificates worth $3,000/year, renewable for four years ($12,000 value), applicable to future full-time day school enrollment at Johnson & Wales. In addition, they will each be entitled to a "Chef for a Day" on-site visit to their school, (held Wednesday, May 25th at BFA) and receive a collection of prizes including: a pastry kit from Ateco, a subscription to Cooking Light magazine, a copy of "Discovering Food and Nutrition" from Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, a gift basket from Healthy Kids Challenge, a spice rack from McCormick and a Waring handheld mixer.
Dr. Manuel Pimentel, senior vice president of university relations, said, "This contest is a way for middle-school students to start thinking about how to make their meals more nutritious. Perhaps some of these young chefs will end up graduates of Johnson & Wales University's Culinary Nutrition program."
"Childhood obesity is a front-page story in America," noted Vickie James, program director of Healthy Kids Challenge, said, "HKC aims to educate and motivate kids and their families to make healthy living a habit. The contest helps to get kids thinking about how to make a recipe healthy; the 'Chef for a Day' visits will expand that thinking to an entire classroom."

The 8th Graders held a Conflicts in American History Night
April 14th.
The 6th Grade held a Science Fair April 12th
in the Middle School Gym on Perpetual Motion !
The Middle School Drama Club of BFA Fairfax performed
"Tale of a Mouse" for the final show April 17th.
All were excellent.

BFA and VINS (Spring 2005)
Community Mapping Program
Mrs. Huffman’s fifth grade class has been
participating in a Vermont Institute of Natural
Science (VINS) Community Mapping Program.
This community partnership between the Fairfax
Community Park & Recreation Path Project and the
class was formed as a result a grant written by
Mrs. Huffman and Fairfax Park Project Manager
Ms. Lizotte.
Since the beginning of the school year Mrs.
Huffman’s students have been gathering data
about the recreation land area by taking walks
with a Vermont State naturalist, a Vermont State
wetlands expert as well as the Fairfax Historical
Society information about the area.
This project, in coordination with Community Mapping
Staff instructors and the Fairfax Community Park
Project is an effort to educate students to their
community and the use of GPS
(geo-positioning satellite) mapping tools.
Specifically Mrs. Huffman’s class was looking to
collect and create a map of the recreation path of
the Fairfax Community Park Project and to create an
interpretive trail map of the recreation path with
its historical, environmental and park facility
features.
As a foundation for a future Park Trail Map,
the information gathered this year will potentially
benefit the many users and visitors of the Fairfax
Community Park and Recreation Path in years to come.

Christmas 2004
"The spirit of the season was in the air at
Swanton Teen Center.
The teens checked their lists twice when
they shopped for needy.
WCAX prepared them for frightful weather with
dozens of new hats and mittens.
And Dr. Bill Roberts made all delightful when
he gave the center a new truck.
Since October, the center’s board has been
conducting a fund-raiser to meet operating expenses.
A 2005 GMC ½ ton truck was made possible by Handy
Pontiac of St. Albans.
Gifts of $150 put donors in a pool for the truck.
On Thursday, 12/16, Officer Jason Stoddard drew
Dr. Roberts’ as the winner who then turned the truck
back to the center.
Teens, parents, and board members all cheered when
they realized what happened.
With over two hundred contributors and citizens
like Dr. Roberts, there’s no room for Scrooge in
Franklin County."

School Honors Reg & Pat Broe
by Scott Lang (& Chris)

April 14, the day before long time BFA employee of the maintenance staff, Reggie Broe retired, students and staff all gathered in the high school gym to say thank you to a man who has given so much to keep BFA a safe and a wonderful place for learning. Reggie will be joined in retirement in a few months by his wife Pat who also has served the school for years in different capacities. Symbolically, the day of Reggie’s retirement was the first day of the gym floor replacement project. Middle school principal Tom Walsh noted that an era had come to an end with Reggie Broe and the high school gym floor being replaced, "One had bad knees and one was bad for the knees." A retirement party was held for Pat and Reggie on May 2nd at BFA in the Elementary Gym. Many people attended, Lyall roasted both Reg and Pat, they both received many golf oriented gifts.
May all their days be spent in the fairways.
The gym floor project is scheduled for completion by June 1.
Mother-Daughter Book Group
This month we will continue with 'So B It."
The discussion will be held on Wednesday,
November 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fairfax
Community Library.
This series is recommended for students in Grades 5-8.
This series is free and open to the public.
Please call the library at 849-2420
for more information.

Annie Sells Out
by Linda Horner

"Annie" opened Thursday night, July 7th at BFA Fairfax
and the show was sold out !
Friday's show also sold out !
Tickets for Saturday's two shows sold out fast
and now the show has come and gone.

"Annie" is a spunky Depression-era orphan
determined to find her parents, who abandoned her
years ago on the doorstep of a New York City
Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.
In adventure after fun-filled adventure,
Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations,
befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
and finds a new family and home in billionaire
Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell
and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
A must for any theatre with a large family audience,
"Annie" has proven a sure-fire crowd-pleaser,
as its record-breaking Broadway run, star-studded
motion picture version, hit 20th anniversary Broadway
revival and national tour, and countless productions
around the globe each year attest.
With its upbeat ending, a bright tuneful score
which has become a part of the nation's musical heritage,
a cast of characters which includes many scene-stealing
roles for children (including the coveted title role)
and a classic villainess audiences love to hate,
it's no wonder this heartwarming show has become
an international sensation.

PARK VOLUNTEER WORK DAY
Regarding our hay mulching effort schedule
for this weekend - in addition to volunteers
to mulch and rake spread hay, we need someone
with a pickup truck to transport the bale chopper
from Milton Rental to and from the Park.
The Milton Rental Company has donated the use of
a bale chopper for BOTH Saturday 8/20 and Sunday 8/21
for this weekend's athletic field seeding and
mulching effort!
This is close to a $200 value and we need to
recognize their contribution.
Next time you are considering a rental need or
are in there for some other reason, please
be sure to say thank you for their support
for the Fairfax Park Project
(this is not the first year they have donated
the use of this bale chopper)!
Is anyone available to do the pickup and/or
return of this equipment?
This would require a pickup truck or truck
with a trailer to transport between Milton
Rental and the Park.
Pickup can occur after 4pm on Friday or
between 8-9am on Saturday morning.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience.

Fairfax Concerts "On the Green"

from their blankets and lawn chairs.

*Saturday, January 14th*
Hazen 58, BFA Fairfax Bullets 53
Hazen JV 44, BFA Fairfax JV Bullets 27
Hazen has one of the best offensive basketball
players in the State of Vermont in Brad Mader.
BFA is well known for defense. (Jan 05 S.I.)
Ben McAvey, Russell Manning, Alex Weber and
Jake Ainsworth all covered the 6'8" Mader.
BFA led 22-14 with 1:00 left in the first half.
Seth Rebeor scored almost at will and drew 2
fouls from Mader, but 4 quick points to end
the first half and 5 quick points to open the
second half put Hazen up 23-22. BFA took the
lead back on Rebeor's driving lay-up, but
Hazen's speed, tough defense and sharp passing
kept the Bullets chasing them the rest of the
way. Hazen led 35-32 after three quarters.
Coming down the stretch, Hazen's near perfect
free throw shooting put the game away.

Friday, January 13th was sunny and warm in
Fairfax and Georgia, VT, a.k.a. Franklin-1.
Temperatures were in the 50's with sunshine.
The Enosburg girls won both basketball
games, handily, at BFA Fairfax.

On Saturday, March 4th, 2006, fewer than 100
voters turned out for Town Meeting Day in the
Elementary Gym at BFA Fairfax.
Bob Horr and Ed Nuttall gave a presentation of
town reports for the prior and upcoming years.
Impact Fees were discussed along with sidewalks,
red lights, posted speeds, a second water source,
disposal of refuse and the Sheriff.

The voting began after the lunch break at 12:45.
Only one person voted against the new full 40
hour a week Sheriff's contract. It passsed !

The bathroom article was motioned to be tabled
but voted down. After a nice presentation by
Carol Lizotte, the discussions began. One asked
if it wasn't just a "glorified port-o-potty."
Another said anybody can just walk up to the
school, while others said that was too far.
The voice vote was too close so voters went to
line up for a paper ballot vote.
By a vote of 54-32, the bathroom was voted down.

The basketball court was next for the Rec Park.
It too was voted down by a show of hands 34-33.

The Auditors positions were up next and a good
discussion followed. Jackie Bruning, Becky
Neapolitano and Karen Langelier were commended
by a voter, but their positions were eliminated
by a vote of 36 to 31. Only 67 people total voted.
Thanks to Karen, Jackie and Becky, you should
all be commended.
